Member Services Project Associate

The Urban Homesteading Assistance Board (UHAB) is seeking a Project Associate in the Member Services Department who is fluent in both Spanish and English.

 

The Organization

UHAB has a rich history in affordable housing and community renewal through organizing, developing, and supporting low-income resident-controlled housing cooperatives and tenant associations. Since 1973, UHAB has been organizing tenants to fight poor living conditions in multi-family buildings neglected or abandoned by landlords. We have helped form hundreds of tenant associations and assisted in the transformation of some 1,600 distressed rental buildings into 1,200 affordable co-ops, providing homeownership opportunities for more than 30,000 households. By promoting self-help among residents, UHAB works to sustain this thriving affordable housing community.

Our activities include advocacy, classroom and on-site housing management and maintenance training, development of new co-ops, development consulting, and special services to member co-ops, such as bookkeeping, insurance, legal advice, bulk purchasing, IT assistance, and guidance in applying for cost-saving energy conservation programs.

UHAB’s work is carried out at our offices in Lower Manhattan and Harlem by 40 dedicated staff members.

 

The Position

The Project Associate, based in the main office in Lower Manhattan, will report to UHAB’s Director of Member Services.

This department aims to help residents of affordable co-ops keep their operating costs low through economies of scale, and to provide the tools and support that these co-ops need to remain or to become financially and physically healthy. More than half of New York City’s low-to-moderate-income co-ops have joined UHAB as members.  As a result, they have access to a variety of high-quality cost-saving services, from group fire and liability insurance and our fuel buying program to cooperative accounting options, including online  bookkeeping (Connected Book$).

 

Responsibilities

The Member Services Project Associate has primary responsibility for the delivery of information and money-saving services to member buildings.  Spanish fluency is required. 

Services that the Member Services Associate will work on include these:

  • Maintaining the Fire and Liability Insurance Program, the largest member service with more than 600 buildings enrolled. Working with insurance broker to assist buildings that want to obtain coverage as well as those already in the program.
  • Enrolling buildings in UHAB’s Fuel Program, which provides discounted oil and gas, and educating building on rising energy costs.
  • Coordinating and administering the Energy and Sustainability programs designed to reduce energy usage and deliver efficiency measures to buildings.
  • Organizing, coordination, and outreach for seminars on a range of topics, from energy efficiency and sustainability to building operations and maintenance.
  • Publication of a newsletters, both in print and online.
  • Coordinating marketing and publicity efforts as part of a larger organizational strategy to maintain and develop the uhab.coop website as well as UHAB’s online profile.

 The Member Services Project Associate will

  • communicate with Co-op Boards of Directors, other shareholders, and building managers or management company representatives to deliver services and information to cooperatives
  • provide assistance to Boards and other shareholders to enroll buildings in programs, publicize new laws, rules, regulations, and services and opportunities for cooperative buildings that could improve the performance of the buildings
  • provide assistance by telephone and email, offering information and referrals based on specific issues, problems, and needs
  • provide weekly work plans and progress reports, and meet regularly with supervisory staff to discuss progress and future work and to identify areas for improvement
  • provide support to fellow staff members in growing programs and services for member buildings and the affordable co-op community

 

Qualifications

The Member Services Project Associate will be an entrepreneurial self-starter interested in providing services aimed at increasing the sustainability of low-income housing co-ops while also generating income to support UHAB’s overall work.  Fluency in Spanish is required.

Coaching and on-the-job training will be available to fill skill gaps. However, from the start, the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate that he or she

  • has a degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, or Environmental Sustainability, or related studies
