Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging, Assistant Director
The Urban Homesteading Assistance Board (UHAB) is seeking an experience People Professional to serve as the Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging. This role reports directly to the Chief People & Culture Officer and is essential in promoting UHAB’s commitment to an inclusive and equitable workplace. The Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging will work closely with staff and management in the organization to foster a climate of mutual trust, respect, and shared awareness. This role is pivotal in driving UHAB toward greater inclusivity and ensuring that all employees feel valued and heard.
About UHAB
UHAB empowers low- to moderate-income residents to take control of their housing and enhance communities by creating strong tenant associations and lasting affordable co-ops. Since 1973, UHAB has helped form hundreds of tenant associations and assisted in the transformation of some 1,600 troubled rental buildings into 1,200 affordable co-ops, providing homeownership opportunities for residents of more than 30,000 apartments. With democratic community control at the core of our mission, we work to sustain this thriving affordable housing community for this generation and those to come.
We organize residents to be active participants and decision-makers in shaping their neighborhoods. UHAB’s programs address a full spectrum of affordable housing needs: from building resident power and organizing tenants as community leaders, to developing thousands of units of affordable housing across the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, to making loans to first-time homeowners, to preserving existing affordable co-ops through training, education workshops, technical assistance, and regulatory compliance. UHAB’s programs and activities address the needs of future generations through long-term solutions: developing new affordable co-ops, creating energy efficient and solar power opportunities, and strengthening housing policy.
Role and Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging:
- Owning and leading all DEIB initiatives, programming, and offerings both internally and externally at UHAB, with the support of the Chief People & Culture Officer
- Serving as support for the Chief People & Culture Officer in areas such as onboarding, employee relations, and external support
- Chairing established employee resource groups and making recommendations for best DEIB practices
- Building on the established UHAB DEIB Framework to further inclusivity and equity across the organization
Internal Focus
- Fostering a workplace culture that is rooted in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB)
- Creating spaces and intentionality to acknowledge, embrace, support, and hear employees of diverse identities and world views
- Conduct and/or coordinate quarterly trainings for the organization on topics including appropriate workplace conduct, fair treatment, workplace bullying and both vicarious and directly experienced trauma, and racial, gender, LGBTQ+, and cultural anti-oppression
- Serve as a first point of contact for staff concerns, issues, and questions
External Focus
While this role centers around improving the organization’s own internal practices and employee experience, it will also help to inform our external work with people and communities. This work includes:
- Collaborating with managers and staff to review and further UHAB’s racial justice and anti-oppression impact
- Providing technical assistance to UHAB’s program areas to incorporate actionable anti-racism, anti-oppression strategies into daily work
- Implementing a system for regular monitoring and sharing of progress on racial and social justice initiatives
Education & Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, or a related field
- Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing DEIB programs and strategies
- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership
Location:
This position is hybrid based at UHAB’s office in Lower Manhattan and requires in-office presence three days per week, including Mondays.
Compensation:
$77,000 – $80,000 annually
