Lead Tenant and Community Organizer, Brownsville and East New York

The Urban Homesteading Assistance Board (UHAB), empowers low- to moderate-income residents to take control of their housing and enhance communities by creating strong tenant associations and lasting affordable co-ops. Since 1973, UHAB has been helping New Yorkers with limited means become part of their own housing solutions. Our work is guided by core principles self-help, democratic resident control, and low income housing.

UHAB’s organizing and policy department works with tenants who are at risk of displacement due to predatory behavior from landlords, gentrification, or poor living conditions. Tenant associations that UHAB works with fight to educate and enforce existing tenants’ rights, and to strengthen them through participating in city- and statewide campaigns. UHAB organizers co-founded the Crown Heights Tenant Union (CHTU) in 2013, and we are currently working to create a new tenant group in Brownsville and East New York that will fight collectively for housing justice. In addition, since 2001 we have helped over 75 rental buildings organize to become affordable housing cooperatives.

UHAB is seeking a Tenant and Community Organizer to focus on building tenant associations in Brownsville and East NY. The Organizer will work alongside tenants and community leaders to build tenant power and connect tenants to larger policy issues and campaigns such as strengthening the New York State Rent Laws and fighting back against speculation and predatory landlords in NYC. The Organizer will work to build tenant associations in buildings facing distressed building conditions, severe tenant harassment, and loss of affordability.

  • Support the development of tenant associations in buildings in Brownsville and East New York.
  • Identify targets and campaigns through research and outreach to find buildings where the landlord is using predatory tactics.
  • Support the growth of tenant leaders through training, skill-sharing, and one-on-one meetings.
  • Grow the tenant base in Brownsville and East New York through regular outreach alongside other UHAB organizers and tenant leaders.
  • Outreach to and mobilization of tenant associations to participate in, and support the work of, city and statewide coalitions to strengthen affordable housing in New York City.
  • Coordinate with UHAB’s development department to identify and organize buildings where cooperative ownership is possible.

The ideal candidate will be computer proficient, personable, flexible, and have:

  • a strong commitment to housing and economic justice,
  • at least one year prior experience working as a community or labor organizer (preferably within New York City),
  • an ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and accessible way,
  • strong oral and written communication skills,
  • the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and effectively handle multiple projects at the same time, and
  • An interest in cooperative housing and alternative models of ownership.

The position is based primarily out of our offices in Lower Manhattan, but will include significant amount of time in field work in Brooklyn.
