Josephine is from New York. She was born in Manhattan and raised in Staten Island but often visited Harlem to see her extended family. She moved into the building to find affordable rent in the city as a childcare worker making minimum wage. She has been living in her HDFC for over 4 decades and played a significant role in maintaining the co-op. Many of the pioneers of the building have passed away, and she expressed the difficulty of maintaining leadership and knowledge over generations. Josephine expressed gratitude that living in an HDFC has offered a chance to have a stable, affordable place in the city.
