“This is real, we did it”: Bronx tenants become their own landlord

With the assistance of UHAB (Urban Homesteading Assistance Board) and the City’s Housing Preservation & Development, tenants secured ownership of the building for under $4 million in 2022. This transformation empowered residents like Claudia Waterton, who noted the tangible benefits of ownership: ‘If I need something fixed it gets fixed. I don’t have to keep going back and forth with the landlord.’”
